KNEELING

A city’s chore

In phantom rest

Recline at last

In parody

We are dutifully

Blessed

We sigh unseen

The green comes mean

Stains in the air

Burdens of care

To cathedrals we go

Marching slow

To tame some flame

To bend us low

JARRING

The wind up there

Will it blow

And breeze through trees?

Will flowers grow?

Will streams flow?

Does nature cease

Where minds increase?

Do beasts wander stars

Near and far?

Or is it a jar?

A terrarium space

Of samples so dear

Kept alive for fear

Of future emptiness

Here

RUTH BANCROFT GARDEN

Where eucalyptus

Soar along with cirrus

And agaves pinpoint light

Festoons of crimson

Nimbly grace

Prickly pears’

Staunch embrace

Linden leaves fall

Like sunset parachutes

Greens of gold

In forms so old

Cups of drink

Within them slink

Dreams in air

Painted yearnings

Brushstrokes curving

Catching cotton

Swabbing longly

In shade well-trodden

Deep in souls

Not forgotten

KISS

I handed you over to tiny sunbursts

My child

My mind

This slip of time

HORNS

Rattle each verse

Til they split at the

Seams

Unlock your horns

Bereft future dreams

Cataclysmic enchantments

Come hither

Full speed

The rifts come to shatter

Our hearts

Left to bleed

JUST LET ME

Just let me walk

Where a fence trims

A swath of grass

Just let me walk

In the shade

Of an old maple tree

Just let me walk

Where the hills meet the dawn

I could never falter

With this walking

These are spaces

Where the soul

Does the talking

LAVENDER

Calculating and prim
Lavender is not ruled
By any light whim

Like small forests
They root and lean
Bridging land
Dry and gleaned

They seek drought
And do without
By building wood from air

They stand up straight
And give back
In spades
The finest scented air

RIGHTEOUS BLIGHT

Chase and bait

Keep the faith

Late in coming

Hear the healing

Far in seeing

Worth believing

Pentecostal dreaming

Seemingly for the good

Of all

Overstep the mark

And it falls

FLUSH

The elegance

Of stardom’s rush

To stoop

And look to find

My own hollows

Flush

GLOWING

Truth in strands

Comes dashing low

Over bent fields

Solemn

We glow
